Students compare different ways of solving algebra problems—including how AI responds—and reflect on which methods are centered or left out.
AI is often used to help students with math. But when it solves algebra problems, it usually shows only one method. This can make students think there’s only one “right” way. In real life, people solve problems in many ways. This activity helps us see what AI misses—and why that matters.
Instructions
- Start by learning or reviewing different ways to solve equations.
Some common strategies:- Balance method (do the same to both sides)
- Guess and check
- Work backwards
- Draw a visual (like a balance scale)
- Use a table or pattern
- Choose a simple algebra equation (like: 3x + 5 = 20).
- Solve the equation yourself using one method.
- Try solving it again using a different method.
- Talk to at least one other person—how did they solve it?
- Now ask an AI chatbot (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude):
“Can you solve this equation step-by-step?” - Repeat the question to the AI 2–3 times in new chats.
- Compare all the AI’s solutions—did it use the same strategy each time?
- Compare your methods, your classmates’ methods, and the AI’s.
What patterns do you notice?
Conscientization
Reading the world through this activity
- What method did the AI use most often?
- How did your method compare to the AI’s?
- What happens when AI shows only one “right” way?
- Who might feel left out or confused if only one method is shown?
Praxis
Reflection leading to change
- How could it hurt students if AI always shows just one method?
- What might happen if teachers or schools rely too much on AI help?
- What could you do if a friend feels confused by the AI’s solution?
- What should AI tools do differently to support all kinds of learners?
Dialogue
Ongoing discussion
- Share your method and the AI’s method with a partner. What’s different?
- What patterns do you notice across different people’s solutions?
- Did AI treat any method as “more correct” or “more normal”?
- How could talking about different strategies help all students feel confident?
